Growing with the resources we have

At Zumtobel, we work according to the principles of the circular economy. Not only to conserve resources but also to make our premium lighting solutions last longer. We design our sustainable innovations to be reusable, repairable or recyclable. With our high quality and durability standards, we develop lighting solutions that focus not only on the present, but also the future.

The pillars of our circular economy

Sustainable product design

Our products are designed from the outset to be modular and long-lasting. We consciously select high-quality materials that allow our lighting solutions to be used for years and upgraded when needed. This approach slashes the raw materials we consume, stressing our commitment to integrating thought-through design with sustainable benefits.

Retrofitting and reusability

You can upgrade your existing systems to the latest technological standards thanks to our refurbishment programme. Instead of replacing entire systems, we modernise the components, saving resources and maximising the lifespan of our solutions. Not just environmentally sound, but economically beneficial too.

Recycling and closed material loops

We always aim to reintegrate our products into the raw material cycle at the end of their lifetime. Our luminaires are designed to be simple to dismantle and recycle. That is how we actively help reduce waste and recover valuable raw materials - in line with our high standards for environmental responsibility and design excellence.

A circular economy pilot project with EUROSPAR & Caritas

In collaboration with carla, a social enterprise of Caritas, Zumtobel's TECTON continuous-row lighting system was tested to try out circular economy principles in practice. Our goal was to develop a sustainable dismantling process and efficient return logistics, in partnership with Voestalpine and Spar.

Cradle to Cradle

Bronze

Achieving the current Cradle to Cradle® 4.0 Standard certification is complex, time-consuming and costly. Yet Zumtobel has made every effort to meet the certification standards with ARTELEA.

Cradle to Cradle® requirements

Material health

A product's components are defined throughout its entire life cycle and subsequently tested for their effects on the environment and health. They are then optimised to achieve a positive, sustainable impact. This is governed by the Cradle to Cradle® Restricted Substances List (RSL). All substances listed on the RSL have to be removed and replaced to achieve Cradle to Cradle® certification.

Product circularity

The product is designed for multiple life cycles. The optimal design solution for the next life cycle has to be determined early in the product development phase.

Clean air and climate protection

The product is put together using renewable energy sources. Production is optimised to reduce emissions and ideally with a positive impact on air quality.

Water and soil protection

The manufacturer has to protect water and soil ecosystems. Ideally, the product and production site even generate clean water and nutrients for healthy soil.

Social equity

The manufacturing company must commit to protecting human rights and work toward a just and equitable society.

"Design for the circular economy means designing the entire life cycle. VIVO II aims for more than just good recyclability — by focusing on re-manufacturing, maintenance and reuse, we aim to double the lifespan."
