Zumtobel Masterpieces – Light as an art form

The Zumtobel Masterpieces have been created in close collaboration with outstanding figures of our time: luminaires that also make a statement as works of art. They embody visionary concepts and unique collaborations – developed with figures such as Olafur Eliasson, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, and Hani Rashid.
The Masterpieces are part of the Zumtobel Art Collection and are showcased at cultural events worldwide — a brilliant example of the fusion of art, architecture, and light.

VorteXX

The symbiosis of organic line design and dynamic light colour modulation.

Following a joint idea by architect Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher, in collaboration with Sawaya&Moroni, Zumtobel created the light sculpture VorteXX. It creates a perfect symbiosis of organic line design and surprisingly dynamic light colour modulation. The origin of the impressive design is the vision of an endless band of light. The charismatically curved contour evokes a double helix and presents itself to the viewer as an eternally flowing form - weightless, impulsive, and radiant.

Starbrick

The Starbrick is an experiment in light modulation and space.

The Starbrick is a light module developed by Olafur Eliasson in collaboration with Zumtobel. The module is extremely versatile: it can be used as a pendant, floor, or table luminaire. Putting the modules together creates free-standing or suspended sculptures, or ceilings and walls. The state-of-the-art LED technology offers a wide range of lighting options. The LEDs can be dimmed and can be used for both direct and ambient lighting. The Starbrick offers a variety of application possibilities, whether in residential areas or public buildings.

EL

The perfect luminaire should emit the essence of light itself.

Daniel Libeskind has designed the eL Masterpiece. One of the lighting options created is based on an algorithm developed by Daniel Libeskind's son, Dr. Noam Libeskind, an astrophysicist at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam. This algorithm illustrates the evolution of light in the universe, from the Big Bang to the present and into the future.

LQ

The LQ is the modern interpretation of the historical chandelier.

The renowned architect and artist Hani Rashid presents his interpretation of the historic chandelier with the design of a modern chandelier. "LQ", a humorous reference by the New Yorker to the Sun King Louis Quartorze, alludes to the opulence of earlier chandeliers and adapts it to modern times.

"I wanted to create a truly unique object, an object that emits light naturally — light that embodies the complexity and the same interesting properties as the light that surrounds us."
Daniel Libeskind
